The Estelle Shohet Brettman Memorial Lecture Series
at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
A Clash of Gods:
Christian versus Pagan Icons
Thomas F. Mathews, The John Langeloth Loeb Professor
of the History of Art, Institute of Fine Arts, New York University

Remis Auditorium
Sunday, December 3, 2000, 3 p.m.
Icons, panel paintings of sacred subjects, are most often associated with Christian Byzantium, but are not unique to it. This lecture will consider early Christian art in the broader context of the surrounding Graeco-Roman and Jewish world, and examine how early Christian and pagan art borrowed from--and competed with--each other.
Free and open to the public
Presented by the International Catacomb Society and the
Department of Art of the Ancient World, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
